Review of The Night of the Hunter (1955) by David B — 15 Jun 2011
Not a popular film at the time due to it's very dark themes and the nasty badness of mitchum - who is incredible - as the treacherous 'priest'. Its darkness invades every scene and the cinematography is really very effective.
It has that 'sound stage' theatricality typical of films of the era but that is an artifact I find rather pleasing. I believe scorsese drew quite heavily on this for his version of cape fear.
