Review of The Night of the Hunter (1955) by Nandi C — 04 Apr 2012
If you want to check out the dark side of a person all the while, fooling all but a bunch of kids who knows his game, this is the movie for you. Alright, taking it from the top. There was a man who robbed a bank, and before they took him away, he put the loot in his daughter's doll for safekeeping.
Unfortunately, the fella goes and tells his cellmate, played by a real slick, mysogynist Robert Mitchum, who gets out of jail, courts and marries the doomed man's wife, and kids, putting himself off as a preacher, but always having his eye on the big prize.
What those poor children went through was sad indeed, but thank God for those who look out for them. One of the very best in American cinema. What I like about it is the many themes that play here, yet somehow they come together in a nice tidy bow as this movie.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
