Review of The Night of the Hunter (1955) by Peter F — 22 Sep 2012
Actor Charles Laughton's first and last directorial effort is a true masterpiece. Night of the Hunter's storyline is rather simple, but it's the perfect ground for exploring the nature of good and evil, particularly through Robert Mitchum's performance as one of the most insidious preachers to ever grace the silver screen.
The film making is also adept, with a lot of emphasis placed on shadows and ghostly imagery that appears more aligned with German Expressionism than Film Noir. Movies don't get much more satisfying than this.
