Review of The Night of the Hunter (1955) by Maxwell S — 07 Nov 2012
If black is evil and white is good, then this film is grey. This film's wide scope perfectly captures each shade of grey. Mitchum has an undoubtably effective performance. Though this film works in every way as far as it's expressive means to it's profound interest in the mystery of good and evil and just to disturb/terrify, it also contains some of the most powerful imagery of all time (each of the three techniques I listed are perfectly balanced).
Wholly the cinematography suits the intentions of the film. Wherever Laughton found the genius in this film is unknown to anyone. Words cannot do justice to "The Night of the Hunter".
