Review of The Night of the Hunter (1955) by Doctor S — 25 Feb 2009
Now I'm wondering why this one has become a benchmark film. There are some striking images and unusual compositions, which is its strongest suit, as envisioned by first-time (and last-time) director Charles Laughton - yes THE Charles Laughton.
But the narrative is fractured and downright silly at times, and while Robert Mitchum is coolly threatening, he's nowhere near as menacing as in his classic portrayal of evil in 'Cape Fear' seven years later.
I would classify this as more of an oddball than must-see.
