Review of The Night Listener (2006) by Justin A — 01 Jul 2009
If you know the story behind "The Night Listener", you'll probably like it. However if you don't, than you'll find it boring and a waste of time. It was written by Armistead Maupin, author of a suspense-novel series, who claims that "The Night Listener" is a true story that happened to him in real life.
I don't know if that's true, but if the movie feels slow-paced and overly somber, it at least feels believeable. All the characters are really hard to understand and connect with, but that's because they're filled with mixed intentions and multiple feelings of their own, which works well with the movie's quiet, subtle nature.
Although the relationship between Robin Williams and the boy never evolves or takes off into something substantial, Williams is great here much like he was in "Awakenings" as the introverted doctor.
To the same degree, Williams acheives that quietness, percieved as fear, that is rare for him but is required for this movie. Even though the movie drags and has trouble taking off all the way until the climax, I marginally recommend it.
