Review of The Night Before (2015) by Jono M — 24 Dec 2015
I usually enjoy this type of Seth Rogen comedy. I don't mind crass jokes, the use of illegal drugs, and some occasionally trippy images of things, or people, doing absurd things. But man, watching this film felt like a torture.
I only laughed 3 times and I usually laugh more than that. It is a strange combination of a serious drama with substance and obnoxious comedy, and it doesn't quite work. I was angry at the Seth Rogen character throughout the film (this rarely happens, by the way), and I was never engaged with the story or the characters.
The best part of the film is Michael Shannon as this incredibly mysterious stoner. He steals the show and brings laughs through a deadpan performance. But other than that, The Night Before doesn't offer much.
It's a mess.
