It's an effective blend of goofball buddy cop comedy and 70s action/noir raunchiness/darkness without sacrificing any element too much for another; Crowe and Gosling play off of each other nicely (pun somewhat intended), the plot is thoughtful enough, and the end result is fine summer entertainment.
