Review of The Nice Guys (2016) by Brandon W — 21 Jan 2017
The Nice Guys is directed and co-written by Shane Black, and it stars Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling in a mystery comedy crime buddy cop about a guy who punches people for a living, and a detective who gets drunk that ends up working together to look for a missing girl that's in the porn industry.
This is actually my first time watch a Shane Black film that wasn't Marvel, which is weird considering that I wanted to see Kiss Kiss Bang Bang for a long time, and the only films he had been involved that I've seen were the Lethal Weapon series.
It took me a while to get a hold on this because there were other films for me to watch finally. So for getting to watch the film, it really didn't disappoint. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling are at the top of the game and having a lot of fun working together with this.
Angourine Rice is surprisingly great at talking adult while being taken seriously that I kind of want to see These Final Hours more since she's in it. The chemistry between them has a lot of spark to the film's advantage in terms of the terrific dialogue that Shane Black and Anthony Bagarozzi did a great job of establishing characters and just go for it while still making an interesting mystery.
The action scenes are entertaining to watch, and it's really funny with some memorable scenes that are just hilarious. You don't really quite know about where it's going, and it's a lot of fun to watch.
The Nice Guys is definitely a Shane Black film that went back to his olden days with the buddy cop genre, and it's really what he is at his strongest.
