Review of The Nice Guys (2016) by Maksim B — 28 Nov 2016
Messy, but irresistibly cool and slick, The Nice Guys is a raunchy, fizzle-filled buddy action comedy that brings back the audience back to the best years of this genre. Funny, violent and bolstered by the amazingly good chemistry between its two leading actors, this movie is a sort anti-buddy movie that works perfectly as a tribute to the glorious 70s & 80s and the countless TV series of this genre.
Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) and Holland March (Ryan Gosling) are two private detectives who loath each other. Yet, they have to co-operate in order to find the dirty truth surrounding the alleged suicide of a former porn-star. With different ways of doing their jobs, both guys have to adapt to each other in a funny and strange anti-buddy way. Both Crowe and Gosling play off each other in such a manner that it is totally delightful to observe them, in spite of the quite messy story. The blend of two outstanding performances, slick direction by Shane Black, a well-crafted tribute to a whole part of the cinema history and a good final twist, makes The Nice Guys one of the pleasant movie surprises of 2016.
If you are searching for an action-packed buddy comedy with profane humor and loads of pop-culture references (such kind of movies we have seen a lot recently), you will certainly be disappointed by The Nice Guys simply because it is smarter, more intelligent and aiming at the type of audiences that is not going to the theaters for the pop-corn blockbuster flicks.
In conclusion, The Nice Guys is definitely a nice movie and it is completely recommendable fun !
