Review of The Nice Guys (2016) by Dragonsfoe . — 17 Aug 2016
Don't finish last.
Shane Black loves making great and awkward pairings, the pair of Crowe and Gosling is no exception. Black has yet again made a very funny and energetic script filled with great comedic gags, that we definitely need more in this dry movie landscape.
The star of this movie, front and center, is Shane Black. He has written such a snappy script and has given the film such stylistic and tight direction and makes the audience wonder why he hasn't made more films as of late. The central cast is fantastic, Crowe is the sarcastic funny guy, while gosling is the "real" by the book PI who makes his teenage daughter drive him around everywhere. These 3 characters are fantastic, and just the thought of them together makes me crack up.
This film does have pacing issues at some points and the plot itself is not as engaging as it could've been, but the film still really works and delivers on what it said it was going to do.
Overall this is a very fun ride that builds on very great characters. This is the type of film that demands a sequel. It also demands Shane Black to become a more frequent filmmaker.
Rating: 7.8 (B+).
