Review of The Next Karate Kid (1994) by Michael L — 11 Mar 2009
They took a major risk reviving the franchise at all. Making the protagonist a teenage girl was an even bigger risk. Did it work? Yes and no. It was an interesting watch, though. The sensitivity of the sinsei-student relationship had returned.
It was something missing since the first film. Whether or not Julie has the sympathy of the viewer is simply in the eye of the beholder. She is not Daniel LaRusso, but even that character lost steam. Maybe the story was told best the first time around, but they did alright trying again.
