Review of The Next Karate Kid (1994) by Alexander D — 29 Jul 2011
The Next Karate Kid isn't as bad as you think, but something really holds it back: the antagonists are psychotic high school hall monitors. This is a hilarious setup for a comedy, but not a Karate Kid movie.
Hilary Swank is good and Pat Morita is still the endearing Mr. Miyagi. The segments that show Julie (Swank) growing as a woman through Miyagi's karate are engaging to watch, but not much else. Michael Ironside is good at playing villains as seen in Total Recall but he's very one-dimensional here.
Even Daniel-san is only given a brief mention... was Ralph Macchio really busy to even appear in one scene? Like all Karate Kid movies (even the first), this film does not end with a resolution; there's a final fight, then the credits roll.
The Next Karate Kid has a few moments of worthiness and it's not awful even with its problems, but it's nowhere near the first in the series.
