Review of The Next Best Thing (2000) by Galina S — 10 Jul 2010
Madonna and Rubert Everett star in the 2000 Comedy-Drama "The Next Best Thing", a movie revolving around a gay man fathering the child of his woman-best-friend.
The movie was, in my opinion, great. In 2000, homosexuality was not a dinner-table topic, so the movie was touching a, taboo, subject of the time. Madonna draws a great performance in the movie, one of her best in years. The only reason, in my opinion, that the movie was shunned is because Madonna starred in it. Critics love eating at Madonna, claiming she can only sing, not act. Madonna has proven in many high-grossing films she can also be queen of the silver-screen. The movie's ending is, a bit, confusing. But makes sense.
Logistic wise, the movie may not make sense at times. But for me, an average person, I find this movie timeless. It would have been a huge success these days (2010) as homosexuality is receiving spotlight in all forms of media. I find no flaws in this hilarious comedy-drama. Though some may contradict, I find this to be one of my favorites. I hope others could learn to stop looking at Madonna and look at the movie itself and enjoy what potential it has to offer. At times the movie seems dull, but most movies these days are completely dull! This movie is amazing and I hope that others will enjoy it.
