Review of The New World (2005) by Alexis M — 15 Feb 2010
Terrence Malick finds beauty and drama in swaying grasses and rippling water. Just as The Thin Red Line unlike any other war film, this is no standard historical adventure. Told with the sparsest of dialogue, it's a feast for the eyes. The performances are terrific, but truly the honours go to the director and his cameramen.
It felt slightly weaker than The Thin Red Line, because so much of the story focuses on John Smith and Pocahontas, I sometimes felt they couldn't sustain the aching chasms between plot developments. In that former film there was a broader ensemble cast to carry the picture.
This is great to watch, but (IMHO) not Malick's finest hour. Indeed, it's perhaps my least favourite of his films, but then he does set the bar pretty high...
