Review of The New World (2005) by Farhan M — 09 Jun 2010
A beautiful and tragic film about the ways in which two cultures fail to communicate and realize the true potential of a harmonic, mutually gainful relationship. That is just on a very cursory level though.
.. The poetic soul of this movie is a deep deep chasm. There are images and moments in this film where I was in awe thinking "Wow, it can be done!" This is referring some conception of a pure form of film-making I have in my head.
.. This movie goes beyond words for me, the experience felt very close to perfect. I have been trapped in the grip of this movie, seeing the place I now live, Virginia (which is also the main setting of the film), with new eyes.
This was once a wild, beautiful place... you can't see it from the highways with the headlights of cars brushing your eyes... but in the dark of night on lonely roads surrounded by silent woods a feeling of that beautiful mystery emerges and reminds you that it still exists.
There still exists resounding beauty and wilderness in this world if you let yourself find those hidden places. "The New World" conjures up some moments like this, remarkably finding a way to convey them through image, sound, and word.
