Review of The New World (2005) by Jens T — 13 Aug 2011
The hidden dragon named Terrence Malick's The New World is a project that Malick chose to do instead of a biographic about Che Guvara that he had worked with since the 70s. And what's the result? Two mediocre movies that will never be categorized as classics. The New World is the classical story about John Smith and Pocahontas, played by Colin Farrell and Q'orianka Kilcher. And it's not like the disney picture you saw when you where little, though you can get some laughs when you recognize the dialogues and characters.
The New World is not as well made as Malick's earlier work. The editing is poor, some times you don't know what has just happened. There's not a thin red line, most of it are gone. The only thing that makes this ship float is it's cinematography, the part of Malick's movies which never goes wrong, no matter what story, no matter other technical achievement. So that's the reason I give this picture a thumbs up.
