Review of The New World (2005) by X X — 15 Oct 2011
More than in any of Terrence Malick's films so far, and possibly ever, while watching it I felt a deep, deep twinge of comprehension in select moments when characters spoke in quiet reverie, or when dialogue fell away completely and the sound of trees or music took over.
It's a glance back at something unsettlingly profound in human history, and its insight, however abstract at times, makes the film as haunting and transporting as a memory.
