Review of The New World (2005) by Gene F — 21 Nov 2011
61%?? this movie is a priceless gem for so many reasons - the cinematography, the setting of both time period and place, a love story that is both romantic and complex, the contrast of cultures and spirit, the historical significance of the events, and for the exact reason this site claims it is flawed that makes this film brilliant: "an unfocused narrative that will challenge viewers' attention spans" - it is this slow unfolding of story through an emotional and visual kaleidoscope (I think moreso than most Malick films because this particular story lends well to visual storytelling) that makes it so easy to be arrested by the sensationalist tone yet remain starkly real at the same time.
2 and a half hours and I had to watch it again the night after I first saw it. I guess you could say I really liked it : ).
