Review of The New World (2005) by Matthew T — 30 Jul 2012
Flawed but certainly worth seeing just for the sheer beauty of it.
The New World, though definitely amateur next to the other Malick offerings, as as stand alone film is a very fine piece of art film. The actors are for the most part very good, the only exception being Colin Ferrell who is clearly out of his depth in such a serious film. Ferrell is made for films like Intermission in which he is fully allowed to show his potential, whereas in this typically stylish and heartfelt american fairy tale he is certainly a man with a fork in a world of soup.
The film was very good to look at, and despite maybe being a bit too long as well as a few other flaws in some of the cornier scenes, is a very good film.
By the way those corny scenes are corn to the max, be ready for a serving of cheese.
