Review of The New World (2005) by Kevin D — 13 Oct 2012
I'm simply not a fan of Malick, but I found things to enjoy: the pastoral beauty of the Americas, the bizarre and striking look of England as seen through Kilcher's eyes. But I could. not. fucking. stand. Colin Farrell in this movie. his performance is wretched; I cannot accept him as a part of the period at all; he's in Malick's lens like a fly on sap, and in these subdued surroundings he doesn't bring anything like life to his performance. Kilcher shows promise but could generate no more chemistry with him than with a Calvin Klein cutout. Bale is good, though, of course.
******.
Rewatched. Recanted.
