Review of The New Mutants (2020) by Healingtoolbox — 26 Dec 2020
Low scores here surprise me. Everyone involved behind the camera has lots of experience at these movies. Also contrary to critics and fans, I enjoyed Dark Phoenix (2019). I look for effort, competence, imagination and ingenuity.
New Mutants has these. The final product is not shameful in any way. It's a psychological X-men, less ambitiously psychological than Logan (2017). Maybe in 2020, when male-created profit-driven culture is collapsing under its own weight all around us, neither Dark Phoenix nor New Mutants, two movies about confronting the irrational, inner wolf inside--the American Shadow--is too close for comfort for critics.
