Review of The New Daughter (2009) by Steve S — 25 May 2010
** (out of four).
It's a shame because "The New Daughter" starts off pretty good and builds some tension while keeping you guessing. The last thirty to forty minutes is so terrible that it ruins the entire film.
Kevin Costner plays John James, a famous author. When his wife runs out on him he must care for his two children. He moves them to a deserted South Carolina house in the country. Once there strange things start to happen to his daughter. She becomes moody and like to roll in the dirt of the mound behind the house.
I liked the pacing and the remote feeling to the film and Costner is pretty good. But the climactic moments steer the film into a laughable conclusion. It totally ruins the film.
