Review of The New Daughter (2009) by Sherry L — 30 Oct 2010
Oh. My. God.
Kevin Costner really hitted the bottom this time!
The lack of inspiration is something that is impossible not to notice during the whole movie. You get the impression that the filmmakers were just lazy and decided to "borrow" sequences of dozens of other horror movies.
Don't be fooled by the somewhat decent beginning. Towards the end I was laughing, to be honest with you.
Weird aliens (smudged in something that looks like shit) under some mound...
You see what I mean?
I wasn't expecting much from this, but was interested to see Ivana Baquero since I loved her in Pan's Labyrinth and like some of you know, I have a weakness for horror movies. But this was more of a "horrible movie" then "horror movie", actually..:).
The plot; Single parent Kevin Costner with two children, one boy and one teenage daughter, move to a new house that lies deserted in the woods. After a while the teenage daughter starts to behave a bit funny. Costner naturally first believes that it's just puberty, but it soons becomes obvious that it is something completely else. Costner starts investigating the history of the old house and the weird mound and lies outside, and finds out some nasty things about it...
There is really nothing wrong with the plot, but it feels like the filmmakers relied too much on it. Change the script, the dialog and add just an ounce of orginality, just an ounce, and you've made a decent flick out of this!
Cause you could smell some potential in the beginning, and there is nothing wrong with the actors (I forgive you for the terrible overacting, Kevin).
