Review of The New Daughter (2009) by Mickey — 10 Sep 2010
I hesitated to pick this film up at the local video store--the synopsis made it sound run-of-the-mill haunted house/family in peril fare. Sure enough, the initial moments of the movie proved me correct.
But midway through, something happened. Aside from being well-acted from top to bottom (and I'm no Kevin Costner fan), the direction, lack of cheap gore, and genuine atmosphere of dread grabbed me. This is a film that creates terror not by constantly throwing "boo!" moments at its audience, but one that plays off the modern horror found in the demise of the "safe" family.
No one knows how to protect their children any more. And this leads to one of the most horrific endings I've seen in years. Don't pass this one by. Will it change your life? Certainly not, but it's a heckuvalot better than most of the crap masquerading as horror fare that gets a theatrical release these days.
