Review of The NeverEnding Story (1984) by Cameron H — 19 Jun 2015
If I grew up with The Neverending Story in my childhood library, it would be difficult for me to separate my nostalgic sentiment from the true quality of the film. I gave 5 out of 5 stars to Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, and I'm content with that rating.
As an adult, seeing this movie for the first time, I fell in love with the dazzling special effects, both for the creatures and the landscapes of Fantasia (The Neverending Story is literally a book whose story takes place in Fantasia, and we see the world through the mind of child reader Bastian), while being as sucked into the story as Bastian is.
The last ten minutes were disappointing, concluding with so many loose ends that I tried my best to overlook them and indulge in Bastian fighting back bullies via a wise luck dragon named Falkor. Everything beforehand was quite grim but still held a lot of childlike wonder, as if the story were a Tolkien tale adapted for kids.
The warrior hero and princess were both children! I don't have much to say for this one. I'm just really happy that I watched it.
