Review of The Net (1995) by Michael A — 31 Dec 2007
So-so cyber-thriller, dealing with stolen identity and big brother-style paranoia, with a good central performance from Sandra Bullock but without a lot else to really recommend it. Director Irwin Winkler is clearly a student of Hitchcock, repeatedly creating characters and set-pieces familiar from his movies, but lacking that extra stroke of genius which made Hitch so special.
As I find is often the case, the first half of the film is best, with things settling down into a more predictable routine in the second. Jeremy Northam's villain doesn't really do it for me - OK, he looks suitably suave and attractive, but I never found myself believing in him as a ruthless killer.
Couldn't they have got Alan Rickman or someone?
