Review of The Neon Demon (2016) by Al H — 17 Oct 2016
First of all, ND's beauty cannot be overstated. Refn's use of bright neon colors against tons of darkness (both literal and figurative) is only enhanced by his steady cinematography. In this way it perfectly captures fashion and modeling itself; unfortunately, it's also as unpleasantly sleazy and downright pretentiously boring as the fashion world as well.
Difficult in nearly every sense of the word, "ND" is opaque, rough, slow, odd and rarely engaging. Think late era Cronenberg without the innate appeal.
