Review of The Neon Demon (2016) by Austin C — 24 Jun 2016
Neon demon.
An artistic representation of how the modeling world can be cruel, twisted and highly competitive. So competitive to the point of killing. But these satanic psychopathic models go so far over board, it leaves no room for character development.
The director feels the plot holes not with interesting character development but with flashy "shows". Shows r in quotes bc there is show watching someone stare deep into the camera while a light show circles around them. I basically had a seizure.
Spoiler alert: these no interesting aspects to the characters to the point the director has to kill off the lead to push any form of story. If your going to focus on the psychopaths then focus on them. Don't put them in the background and try us to engage with them at the end where some very disturbing images arrive.
I get all the metaphors and I understand the approach, but you have to even that out with an engaging character and a well driven story.
