Review of The Neon Demon (2016) by Tessa R — 10 Sep 2017
This film is a masterpiece in its own way. It takes a pretty true idea of what it's like to step into the "dog eat, dog world" of modeling in Los Angeles and Nicolas Winding Refn has no shame bringing that uncomfortable realness to the screen.
I feel a lot of folks found this film disturbing because it was seemingly portraying women in a "bad way"...but when it comes down to it, that is exactly how the modeling industry is. I like how he we as far as to bring cannibalism into it, actually. It was visual symbolism, not entirely intentional for "physical eye candy horror".
I wish critics and or audiences would start to think outside of the box more about the actual messaging and visual notes versus just thinking it's a "terrible horror movie gone wrong"....pehhhh. 5 stars!
