Review of The Nature of Existence (2010) by Elena P — 23 May 2010
I've been hearing quite a bit about this film Facebook, and I finally got to see a special screening of it this evening. I must say it was certainly worth the wait. I saw Religiless, which I loved, but I really wanted Bill Maher to go a bit further than picking on the simple-minded, bible-reading, red-necks of the U.
S. (But, I love it when Maher does it!!) But, this director/narrator really takes on some heavy-hitters and he isn't afraid to ask them some very tough questions. I'll admit, some answers are more profound and some are simpler than others.
However, the most simple AND profound answers came from a 7th grade-girl who happens to be an Atheist!! "If God was the kind of God who listened, wouldn't he grant prayers that wish for no Genocide?" However, there are also some very beautiful and profound things that are said by the Indian Guru, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.
I thought this film's narrator would attempt to spoon-feed me a bunch of answers, however he left me with even more questions that I still don't know if I'll ever have answers to!! But, I'm sure of one thing now: If a 7th-grade girl can refrain from making up answers to explain the mysteries of the world , in order to live in peace -- shouldn't adults be able to do the same?
