Review of The Natural (1984) by Adam R — 05 Jan 2008
Interesting meditation on how America's favorite past time gets mythologized in our culture.
Robert Redford plays Roy Hobbs, a gifted baseball player whose career is haunted by an injury he sustained from a mysterious woman as a rookie. He re-enters the majors during middle age, helping the longshot Knights team win the penant while struggling with his own demons.
Levinson creates an interesting fable, and the mythology surrounding Hobbs is a thought-provoking comment on how American heroes are crafted.
