Review of The Natural (1984) by Edward W — 05 Jan 2008
((Warning: What lies ahead is obvious but might be considered a spoiler by some)).
Probably one of the best sports movies ever made. Redford is really damn likeable, the connection to nature and natural forces is really interesting. Madsen's there for the blink of an eye. The relationships are wonderfully nuanced and complex... a lot is communicated by silence.
This film is a spring that gets pushed and pushed the entire film, compressing energy and emotion into an infinitely small space, until the inevitable homer swing: when the ball cracks off the bat, the emotion explodes, the soundtrack glistens, and your head had better be in the clouds.
