Review of The Natural (1984) by Prentis C — 08 Feb 2010
I kind of liked this movie. It had that perseverance theme that all should take heed of, yet it offered and exciting secondary plot (like when he gets shot, etc.).
My thoughts have been manipulated by the great Roger Ebert's, however. One point being that the "pro" baseball team played like a bunch of sissys when Redford left. I totally missed that fact while viewing the film, but it's the perfect conclusion. The ball going between the legs, guys striking out, and depression setting in over the team. Then Roy came back, and everything was good again.
Ebert also made a point that Roy Hobbs (Redford) was treated like a god in this film, but I have to disagree with him there. He WAS the MAIN character, so what else would you expect out of a Hollywood film? No main character, perhaps? It was the entire focus of the plot, one would wonder why they called it THE NATURAL? Hmmmmm.
Anyways, good movie. I'd recommend watching it.
