The best baseball movie ever? Maybe, but a great film nonetheless. Flawed, with great stretches of incoherent plot wandering in from left field, it is engaging, thought provoking and pleasing. Sentimental yet with an air of harsh realism, and it is this darkness, hovering always at the the edges, that propels it beyond drippy melodrama towards something better.
