Review of The Nanny Diaries (2007) by Howard S — 10 Nov 2008
This film really took its time getting off the ground, but in the end it kind of grows on you. The first half was fresh, but it was not funny enough to be a good comedy and did not have the requisite dramatic elements to be a good drama - it was stuck woefully in between.
Strangely, it was when the film started getting cliched and predictable that it became more adept at tugging the heart strings and became mildly enjoyable. The performances were good, with Laura Linney being the clear standout, but Chris Evans' character was so.
..I don't think cliched is strong enough of a word to describe it. All the romantic interactions between him and the Nanny (except for the bar scene) were painful to watch. The final resolution, while predictable, at least brought everything together nicely, so an extra half-star for that.
