Review of The Nanny Diaries (2007) by Lee G — 12 Jan 2009
I didn't like any character in this film, except Chris Evan's character, but there wasn't enough of him, and most of it was simply a plot device. Laura Linney is wasted in a one-note one dimensional role.
I did feel sorry for Scarlett Johansson's character, for a while. However, after you see her get walked all over for the umpteenth time, it gets hard to feel any empathy. I wanted an angry "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore" confrontation, and there is one, but it is completely passive.
As a result, it comes off as weak and unsubstantial. Then the film is summed up with voice over exposition, another sign of weakness. Here's a suggestion: See The Devil Wears Prada instead. It's a much better film.
