Review of The Nanny Diaries (2007) by Trent B — 05 Mar 2009
It's one of those films that you stumble onto on Sky on a Sunday afternoon and plan on watching five minutes of. Then after five minutes when it's not as terrible as you thought it'd be, you end up watching the whole thing.
It's definitely better than it should be. Yes, it's cheesy, it's predictable and we've seen it all a thousand times before but there's just enough here to make it enjoyable. Firstly, the anthropological report slant is an interesting and welcome idea that actually works. Parts are genuinely funny. And Laura Linney, Scarlett Johansson and Paul Giamatti are all rather good. Sure, it's hard to watch Linney and Giamatti as a married couple and not just picture Mr and Mrs John Adams, but you get over it.
Not great by any means but not bad either. And certainly better than I expected it to be.
