Review of The Nanny Diaries (2007) by Paula M — 29 Jun 2009
This is certainly not your modern day Mary Poppins tale. Though I generally knew what the story was about, I found the stereotypes pushed to the extreme in this film. I'm not saying that these characters don't exist in real life, but I couldn't feel any sympathy for Mrs. X even though she was supposed to be portrayed as a victim, just like Annie. She was just too nasty to like. This movie was fine in the comfort of my home (where I could do other things while watching it), but I would have probably written a more nasty review had I been trapped in a dark theater with this movie. I'm sure there are people who can see past this movie's shortcomings, but I'm tired of one-dimensional characters. We're not dumb viewers. Subtlety is not lost on us.
Finally, was Paul Giamatti strapped for money and took this role? Paul, I thought better of you...
