Review of The Nanny Diaries (2007) by Eric G — 20 Dec 2011
A âbased on a true accountâ? undressing of the upper classes in the vein of The Devil Wears Prada. After the success of the aforementioned film, whole scores of pale imitations of varying blah-ness were produced, as is usual the case.
That being said, this film is one of the better imitations, even if it never reaches the knees of that rather brilliant show-down between Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway.
The main reason this film works pretty well, is the excellent casting of the two main female roles. While I am not as enamoured of Scarlett as most of the world seems to be, I concede that she does an excellent job here.
However, it is Laura Linney and her repressed yet simultaneously painfully intense performance that really stand out here. Linney is one of those much lauded actresses who somehow never seem to have fully captured the audienceâ(TM)s heart. As a result she is well-known enough, but not exactly A-list. Perhaps because of that, she so often appears as a supporting part in films like this. If that is the case, the directors and co-stars should get on their bare knees and worship her for the inevitable boost she gives to the material.
