Review of The Namesake (2006) by Esmeralda A — 20 May 2008
Now, don't get me wrong, this isn't a terrible movie by any stretch of the imagination. I think there is some compelling cinematography here and the acting is really quite nuanced. Unfortunately, the need to progress so quickly through time (at least thirty years is covered in two hours) never allowed me to fully connect with the children's characters (and since they are a central part of the story, this is a negative thing).
Still, I think the story between the parents is touching even if the tension between culture and generation is sadly lost here.
