Review of The Namesake (2006) by Janet L — 05 Jul 2008
Terrific film that explores the multi-ethnic, multi-generational experience of an Indian immigrant couple and their children living in the US. However, the themes of loneliness, cultural confusion and cultural dilution that they explore transcend the Indian immigrant to all immigrant and ethnic experiences.
The characters are believable and for the most part, sympathetic (except for perhaps Gogol's wife) depictions. Ashima (Gogol's mother) performs masterfully -- delicately feminine, strong, wise, and compassionate.
Gogol's journey to self-discovery and bicultural acceptance is moving.
