Review of The Namesake (2006) by Jorge F — 12 May 2009
For someone like me, who knows Kal Penn as Kumar from the Harold and Kumar movies, it needs some time to adapt to this serious one. But he did a great job. The acting of his Indian parents was even better. They where outstanding! With all its conflicts about immigration and adaptation to another country, The Namesake isn't a lightweight for the audience. Nair, the director, did not take the easy way to paint an onesided plot with one final statement - and this is what makes the movie so important.
And - not to be overseen: The parts that play in India are fantastic too. Where Slumdog Millionaire fails completely to show realistic Indian everyday life, The Namesake get's the pulse of it. Another good one according to this: Outsourced!
