Review of The Namesake (2006) by Dana M — 03 Oct 2009
A big yawwwwwn. One more addition to those "cross-cultural cross-generational" movie with stereotypical characters. The book may be good but movie isn't.
The biggest problem with this movie is the lack of chemistry and lack of interaction between main characters. It is more like a collage of events happening over a certain period of time. As a result, you hardly feel sympathy or love or hate for any characters.
The movie has all stereotypes you want, Indian customs and rituals, India=good, west=bad message, streets and crowd of Calcutta..
But again, the focus audience may be people in west who find India exotic and amazing. But for a person of Indian origin, this movie hardly strikes a chord. So far as such "cross-continent" movie goes, I think "Bend it like Beckham" is still the best.
