Review of The Name of the Rose (1986) by Rachna J — 31 Jul 2008
This was kind of interesting for its exploration of church history and medieval times, but it is overlong and the plot drags on and on at a slow pace. I could tell that it is probably based on a very complex and compelling book that has been reduced to a murder mystery in a corrupt monastary.
A bright spot is the acting of Sean Connery as the wise but light-hearted Sherlock Holmes-type figure. Many of the rest of the characters are gloomy and ugly, but that is probably intentional to set the mood.
