Review of The Naked Kiss (1964) by Leandro C — 13 Jan 2011
In one word "wow" ,by 1964 the studio system that Sam Fuller had worked in was on its knees and the director was having to go low budget to get his films made.
Well here its a good thing he did because the film is nothing short of a masterpiece worth viewing for its brutal opening where Constance Towers is revealed to be totally bald after fighting with her pimp!!!.
After that the film settles down to focus on the corruption at the heart of smalltown life including cops looking the other way when dealing with prostitution, unwanted babies, child molesters and much more besides.
To Fullers credit he combines the story strands very well and where it could have been over the top and campy ,the story packs a real punch as Towers tries to build a new life ,but is constantly dogged by her old one.
The low budget really helps the film rahter than hinder it and it allows Fuller to get away with a lot more than if he had made it for studio.
All the Fuller elements are here and it works all too well ,great stuff.
