It really deserves the name "The Naked Gun", because it's a naked machine gun of comedy. The plot seems generic, but let's remember that it's a parody, and the fact that the plot is designed to allow as much gags as possible.

Leslie Nielsen's performance is terrific, and the over characters fit in naturally as well. The movie presents itself really well, and the humour is filled with sight gags and double-entendres that actually work well enough that it still manages to be a clever comedy.

It's clever in that the gags are set up carefully, and it's really earned its fame over the past 25 years.
