Review of The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988) by Kai82 — 09 Aug 2020
One of the best comedy movies of all times. It is a movie based on the TV series Police Squad. It is staring Leslie Nielsen who's greatest gift is staying dead serious in the most funny and humorous situations.
He was so good that he was type cast in this role for the rest of his career. Believe it or not he had a long career before with only serious or no nonsense characters (Except maybe Airplane). This change has even created the trope Leslie Nielsen Syndrome.
Then there are the 3 Producers Zucker / Abrahams / Zucker. They were really good together but would later go separate ways and never were this good again. For the story it is a parody of a police movie with hilarious humor and funny situations.
It has so much creativity and smart jokes. I think all jokes work well and there is no misfire I can remember. While the more modern spoof movie just try hard to string jokes together and fail this movie archived consistency with a great comedic value.
Nothing feels out of place and it is structured well. The actors are well chosen and deliver an excellent performance. Leslie Nielsen has created an arch type. Priscilla Presley, O. J. Simpson (yes that one), Ricardo Montalban and George Kennedy are an excellent addition.
There is a brief cameo by Weird Al Yankovic who is also pure entertainment himself. Overall this is an arch type of a good comedy movie and still worth watching especially when you have only experienced the trashy ones as the genre is pretty much dead by now.
