One of the main reason why slapstick comedy works it's because the movie takes itself serious. Despite this, it is always hit and miss, some more than others. I know when these kind of movies work when they are not just trying to spoof but be entertaining too. If the movie tries too much to imitate cultural references, it's more probable, that it won't be that funny.

"The Naked Gun - From The Files Of Police Squad!" knows this and relies mainly on the slapstick.

Leslie Nielsen plays Lt.Frank Drebin, a police officer with a very naivité in is acts but that does his job. He's trying to find who shot his friend and colleague Nordberg ( OJ Simpson). In the meantime he happens to meet Jane ( priscila Presley) and at the same time be involved in the murder of the Queen of England.

Leslie Nielsen was a great actor in these kind of roles, and Frank Drebin is a character that will always be remembered. It's funny because the movie tries to bring us a serious tone, and then suddenly, something amzingly silly happens. And that's why it's funny. I laughed a lot of times during this, although I thought that the first half hour or so was a little dull. But the rest, well that's really really funny. And it prooves that making comedy is not that easy. t takes timing, talent and hardwork. And ZAZ know how to make it and maintain it fresh.
