Review of The Mystic Masseur (2001) by Andrew S — 14 Sep 2008
It is sad for those who have loved Merchant Ivory's greatest films to see this. In a very straightforward delivery of the plot, much of Naipaul's humour has become so subtle that is has disappeared.
Possibly Merchant's agenda was different than to faithfully render the book to film maybe he saw it as vehicle for an illustration of something personal, I've yet to crack this, the last film he directed.
